From Book to Board Game

The UNEXPECTED JOURNEY of Now You're Talking®

The World Needs Now You’re Talking®

We’ve become disconnected. Everywhere I go, coffee shops, restaurants, bus stops, I see people glued to their screens instead of engaging with the world around them.

We’ve forgotten how to truly connect.

Now You’re Talking® is here to change that.

Hi, I'm Adrienne Giffen, creator of Now You're Talking®.

When I set out to write my book Unravel You, I never imagined it would lead to creating a board game.

Writing a Book

A book about self-discovery sparked something even bigger.

Bringing the Game to Life

Reunited with my childhood inspiration to bring the game to life.

After two years of writing, I finally submitted my first draft, a huge weight off my shoulders.

For the first time in a long time, I could breathe. The process had consumed so much of my life that one evening, my husband Bob jokingly asked if we’d ever talk about anything else again.

The very morning I submitted my manuscript, Bob and I were walking to a coffee shop when I casually said, “If I seem quiet, it’s because I’m thinking about a board game.”

I had no idea what it would be or how it would take shape, I just knew it had to happen.

Over the next few days, I let the idea simmer, observing the world around me. Then, on a whim, I went to a local dollar store and picked up sticky notes, a whiteboard, and some sparkly decorations.

That night, home alone, I arranged everything on the board, and just like that, the first version of Now You’re Talking® was born.

But the truth is, this game had been waiting inside me for decades.

As a teenager, I was inspired by Laura Robinson, the co-creator of Balderdash, who went to my high school. She didn’t know it, but she planted the seed that one day, I too would create a board game.

It wasn’t until writing Unravel You that I uncovered the foundation, a culmination of life lessons, work experiences, friendships, heartaches, and personal growth.

And then, in a twist of fate, Laura and I crossed paths again.

One evening, I invited a group of women from my favorite local gift shop over for wine and appetizers. We had spent so much time together in the store that they felt like friends, but that night, we truly connected.

As I shared my journey of writing a book and creating a board game, one of the women, Meg, lit up.

“I was waiting for you to finish your story,” Meg said, “so I could tell you—I’d love to introduce you to my friend of 45 years, Laura Robinson!”

I nearly fell off my chair.

The woman who had unknowingly inspired me all those years ago was now just one introduction away. That night, Meg and I sent Laura a picture of us together, and soon after, Laura and I connected.

She has been an incredible mentor throughout the process of bringing Now You're Talking® to life. A process, which, fittingly, has taken just as long as writing Unravel You!
